War Dogs of the Pacific

Documentary tells the story of the trainers and their dogs

By John Virata

On this Veteran's Day 2009, as we honor those who served and gave their lives for America, there are stories about man's best friend being told by those who fought alongside their "War Dogs of the Pacific." Most Americans have no idea that dogs were trained to sniff out the enemy during World War II, 549 to be exact fought with the U.S. Marines on Guam, Saipan, and other battlegrounds of the Pacific Theater.

Harris Done's documentary "War Dogs of the Pacific," weaves classic footage of WWII with current interviews with some of the men who trained and fought with these animals. Told in four parts over 46 minutes, Done's film gets you up close and in the foxholes of the war dog trainers and their dogs, 25 of which didn't make it home to the United States.

Ridiculed at first, the War Dogs trainers became some of the most sought out fighting men in the Pacific theater after stories spread that the dogs helped immensely in preventing American soldiers from being killed. These dogs were able to sniff out the enemy, do guard duty, serve on point, and caused the enemy to surrender from their cave hideouts.

It became clear in the interviews with the WWII veterans who were tasked with training and fighting with these dogs that the dogs were more than just another weapon in the war, but rather were an integral part of the platoons in which they were assigned. These dogs were truly their soldiers best friends, with stories told on how the dogs would guard over their wounded masters, how their masters would break down and cry in the event their dog was killed were touching for any dog lover to hear.
