Max?s December DVD Picks

Christmas is the time for watching movies

By Max Kingman

Another month is here, and it just so happens to be the best month of the year. That means another month of great releases from the studios.  Here are Max Kingman?s picks for the month ahead.

Fantastic Four (widescreen)
While this certainly isn?t the best comic book inspired movie Marvel has released it certainly isn?t the worst (Hulk and Punisher).  This foray into bringing the first family of comics to film is done in such a way to keep fans at bay and hopefully bring new fans into the fold.

With a solid cast (including the delicious Jessica Alba as Sue Storm), the team must battle Victor Von Doom for? uh? well that isn?t really explained in great detail? Hey, did I mention it has Jessica Alba in it?

The effects are well done, and for the younger viewer, there is enough action to keep you entertained for a family night in the home theater.

Rockford Files Season One
Finally the bitter squabbling between the parties involved in this show have reached an agreement and fans world wide now have access to the best television show of all time.  If you don?t have cable, and were born after 1980, you probably don?t know about the everyman detective that is James Rockford.  Each week Rockford would get talked into a case or some other hijinx that would land him on the bad side of the mob, the police, or a disgruntled hillbilly somewhere.  By the end of the episode you can be sure Rockford would solve the case and get cheated on his $200/day fee.

He-Man and She-Ra Christmas Special
Might as well throw in a beloved holiday favorite.  Gather around the television with the whole family to relive the adventures of everyone?s favorite Master of the Universe character Orko as he accidentally gets beamed to Earth, then accidentally brings back two children to his universe.  Of course the holiday cheer is too much for Skeletor and it is up to He-Man and She-Ra to save the day.  If this isn?t story gold I don?t know what is!

MacGuyver The Complete Fourth Season
Yes, the adventures of Angus MacGuyver are back in this fourth series collection of action packed stories.  Yes MacGuyver still has the skills necessary to take an ordinary everyday object and turn it into something useful to defeat the enemy.  Woohoo!  This is the television series that made carrying a Swiss Army Knife cool again.  If you bought the first three seasons on DVD, then you must rush out and pick up this collection too.

The 40-Year-Old Virgin
Max Kingman is a huge fan of all things Judd Apatow, so you can be sure this movie is high on my wish list.  Remember those great coming of age films when we were younger, where the kid needed to lose his virginity before he turned 18 or forever be a loser?  Fast forward 22 years and you have Andy Stitzer who made it to 40, lives by himself with his collection of action figures and comic books.  When his co-workers find out, they make it their job to solve the problem.  But should Andy go for the sure thing, or hold out for true love?  A great film with a great theme.

Serenity
While Fox may have killed the television series, they couldn?t stop the signal.  In this theatrical movie, Joss Whedon nicely wraps up most of the loose ends left by the television series.  If you haven?t seen the movie or the television series (also on DVD) Max Kingman won?t spoil anything for you.

Plenty of movies to give as stocking stuffers and to keep you busy the whole month long.  Tune in later in the month when Max Kingman brings you his top ten holiday movies of all time.

For those of you who are feeling especially generous, Max Kingman likes receiving gifts?lots and lots of gifts.

Max Kingman has been watching movies for over 40 years, and has spent the last ten years building one of the best home theaters in all of Kentucky. Max spends his free time in his home movie palace watching the best (and worst) the movies have to offer. Max Kingman often refers to himself in third person. Way to often...
